Surely, i cant surpass L but i can do what he can do.In the movie L won from Yagami Light(kira) and died peacefully.Thats what you call the "very last death".
In the anime death note,L was killed by Rem to save misa.Thats the very last moment of L and light celebrated.while is investigating about kira(his investigating about kira but he is kira) someone called and it was "near",a successor of L.So L seems to be very intelligent,you know why? without L, near will not investigate
